Impossible Odds
Theoretically, it seems impossible for a fledgling army to
defeat the British military, one of the largest and most powerful in the world
during the late eighteenth century. The colonists were seen as having an extreme
military disadvantage when the Revolutionary War began, but their unorthodox
tactics proved, in the end, to be enough. George Washington thought the best
strategy for winning the Revolutionary war was to use sneak attacks and
guerrilla warfare. He was a military tactician, having been appointed
commander-in-chief of the Continental Army in 1775. He had only the equivalent
of an elementary school education, but was well read and educated himself on
military tactics. Though his soldiers were poorly outfitted with little or no
experience, Washington helped lead the troops to victory in the Revolutionary
War using established military tactics.
